Stained Glass Windows - Dec 2015

Stained Glass Windows Memorial

Antony John Stretton, son of John Weston, died on 10th May 2010. In his Will he made provision for the installation of stained glass windows in a Kidderminster church to commemorate the lives of Samuel, Lionel and John.

Antony’s Trustees first arranged for the research and production of the book Dr Stretton, I Presume, to be used as a resource for the designer and negotiated for installation of this memorial in the church of St John the Baptist, Blakebrook, appropriately overlooking the present-day hospital.

Michael Stokes, of MDS Stained Glass won the commission, with design, fabrication and installation being completed in the second half of 2015. The three windows were blessed by the Rt Reverend Dr John Inge, Bishop of Worcester, at a service in the church on 6th December 2015.

To learn more, please see this photo album showing Michael Stokes making the windows and the Order of Service for the Blessing, which includes information from the design studio and some historical notes.

On 7th December 2025 the church celebrated ten years since the installation of the windows. At this event Chris Stretton, Antony’s nephew, presented an illustrated talk telling the stories of the three doctors. The talk was recorded as St John’s Talk Actual here but was not able to capture sufficient detail in the slides. It is 58 minutes runtime. Following the event, in order to make the content available for a much wider audience, Chris produced St John’s Talk Narrated here. This captures full details of all the slides, each of which is voiced with relevant comments. This is 51 minutes runtime. If you have only time to watch one, it is suggested that you choose the Narrated version.
